Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
August 29, 2014
These tires met and exceeded all reasonable expectations over the Winter past which saw a much higher than normal amount of snow on the roads from hard snow pack to iced intersections, deep new fallen heavy snow (wet & dry) and extreme cold where road salt was entirely ineffective. All-in-all it was a bitter, long and snowy season best forgotten but definitely remembered. Even though the CX-5 is AWD and has high ground clearance these "Yokes" made it feel very sure footed and instilled a lot of confidence in their traction capabilities making challenging drives that much safer. On unploughed side roads they chewed through snow depth easily with no slippage or spinning up some steep country hills. The ride was a little firm but so is that of the vehicle - more truck-like than passenger car. Have driven vehicles with BFG Winter Slalom (the older version), Goodyear Ultra Grip GW3 & Michelin X-Ice Xi-2 the Yokohama IG51v seems to be an excellent choice for this type of vehicle (CUV, SUV or LT). If it helps to qualify am a professional truck driver of emergency vehicles and have skid control diplomas and defensive driving certificates. This was the tire selected for my personal vehicle after considerable research and I am very pleased with its Winter performance. I expect others are, too though not many reviews are readily available on-line and that is a little disappointing. Hope this helps other prospective buyers with their selection. Yokohama has a real contender for the best Winter tire with the Ice Guard IG51v.
